Dangerous Social Mashups

I discovered last night that I have three employees. Not.

But there it was. A listing of two Drupal developers and one themer. With their salary ranges which were not insignificant I might add. Still I have a lot of people that I work with but no employees. So how did this happen?

Simplify, simplify, simplify

Many folks know of the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Silly. But how do you implement that in your work life? Really how do you implement it in your life in general?

Leo Babauta takes on this question in an article on ZenHabits.net entitled "13 small things to simplify your workday" Lovely piece of work. Here is the list and my thoughts on how I'm doing on it and where I could improve.

Marketing Drupal, the Small Farm Connection

I have wondered for awhile if focussing on a particular niche was the way to go with Drupal. I have a good friend who is working hard on the "Drupal in a Box" concept. Part of the concept involved having templates for lawyers and others in small business that want a bit more than the blog or cookie cutter world offers.

Sailing Performance and Freelance Business?

Sometimes you see something so simple and you whack your head.

High Performance = (Skill + Commitment) - Distraction

As I was reading about the US Sailing Team's major advances this little formula in the article caught my eye. And while I was tempted to make some connection to the Olympics currently occuring in Vancouver, my neck of the woods, I resisted out of fear of the IOC tracking me down like they did Verizon and Red Bull.

Part of Something Bigger

I just got an email from one of my clients Tony Chen of SavvyDaddy. I've been playing Website Janitor on his Drupal site for a couple of weeks now. The Chicago Sun Times picked up his fund raising efforts for Disaster Relief in Haiti.

Portfolio

My current in depth portfolio can be seen at Portfolio List but I was recently challenged as to how many sites I had worked on. Sites that are still in existence I have linked to.

As I built the list I realized that a legend might be in order:

Community Development and Social Media

Ten years ago I walked away from a career in "Community Development". I was tired of fighting government bureacracy, trying to convince politicians that people were important, and making businesses that should never have even been started - viable.

Twits on the web?

Business in Vancouver had an insipid article on why businesses should be online.  Titled "To web or to not web", Darrel MacMullin laid out the reasons every small business should look at the web. Then he outlined four things that they should look for.

Sailing and Work

Sailing and Angst Comparing Harleys to sailing seemed a bit of stretch.

But then I thought about my guilt at dodging out after a tough day to go sailing and I realized that there is something important that happens when I go sailing.
